Photos for Thought

Sometimes, you can catch the perfect, unguarded, unthought smile with a camera. No posing here. Just happy.

Dew enjoys chew toys more than most dogs. I am certain that someone whispered into her ear, that chewing her toys beyond recognition was her life's challenge!

The Great Mancini is keeping a watchful eye atop his kitchen perch. From his position, he may behold all the general splendor of the kitchen tile that lay before him.

Proof that God makes flowers grow....not me!

Our neighbors went bankrupt in December and left behind their beautiful home. It is going up for sale next month and the asking price is $65,500. It is nicer than my house! I should have waited a little longer to buy a house, I guess!

My Abbey Girl is quite hot in the summer time. She has been enjoying frequent visits to the "bow-wow" beach in Stow. She loves to swim out and fetch the tennis balls we throw!

Mending Broken Hearts

Tonight, I got to make my mama so happy. Before I tell you what I did, I must share a sad story with you. In December, my mother lost her best friend in the whole wide world. Her pug dog- Pebbles. Pebbles was one of my childhood pets that became my mom's pet. Long after each of us grew up and moved out, Pebbles the Pug remained loyally at my mother's side as she faced empty-nest syndrome. She was there when my mom's mom died and when she faced a very scary health crisis. But, after 13 years of loyal love and devotion, Pebbles died a few days before last Christmas. My mother was shattered. No dog in the world could replace her Pebbles. Several months have pasted and my mom stills sheds tears over her lost companion, but today I gave her a beautiful baby puglet. She is all wrinkly and snorty like pugs should be and it was worth every dollar in my pocket to see my mom scream when I handed her the tiny 8 ounce puppy. She of course became all teary-eyed like women do when something is too joyful to hold inside and I couldn't help but feel like the best daughter in the world. She called me this evening and told me how she had spent a small fortune at the store buying all of her "Allie-Girl's" new toys, food and bed. Tomorrow is a new day for my mom and I hope it is filled with all the love and puppy kisses she deserves.

Happily Ever After

I find great joy in spending quality time with my grandparents. They are the example of a simple, loving couple I keep at the forefront of my mind. Sometimes, I walk a few steps behind them, so that I might catch a glimpse of unfailing and true love. I know it sounds trite, but true love really exists. I see it in the way my grandfather holds my grandma's hand while they are walking. I see it written on his face when my grandma returns from a trip to town. When they sit side-by-side on the sofa reading the morning paper, or share a bowl of ice cream on the front porch, it's there. Their home is brimming with love and you feel it immediately upon entering their home. It is a marriage and home built by love. Unconditional and faithful love. I have always said that the couple who suffers together, stays together. Individual hardship is a long, unpaved road filled with wrong turns. Shared hardship unities a couple and prepares them for the endurance required to keep love and God at the center of their life. The beauty of seeing two lives become one life, is a miracle in itself. My grandparents will never make a list of most beautiful couples "as reported by People magazine", but their example has touched my soul to the core. If you ask either of my grandparents how they have stayed married for so long, they will tell you this. "Keep God at the center of your marriage, respect each other, and love more than you expect to be loved."

These last few years, I have seen them both age significantly. Sometimes, my heart skips a beat when they call, for fear it will be the call that ends this love story on earth. I see two smiling old people with care-worn faces laughing at their grandchildren. When they look at each other, I wonder if they see the same thing. Or does my grandpa see a 5- foot tall, 16- year old girl with raven hair and blue eyes sitting on the steps of her school? Does my grandma see her fiance in Army blues stepping off a plane, after being gone for 3 years? One day, when their time here has passed, I will share "their story" with my children. I will always carry them and their love to my marriage and family, so that we may have our own "happily ever after".

5 Guilty Pleasures

1. Black Nail Polish. Love It. It's trendy. It's classy. It looks great with anything. It's just plain fun!
2. Flip Flops. Year round use and great for the person who hates to be bothered with bending down to put on their shoes.
3. DVR
4. McDonald's Iced Coffee in the hazelnut or vanilla flavor. For a mere $1.99, I can get a giant bucket of this delectable drink on my way to work without exiting my car. *Bonus* It is made with low-fat milk, so drink up amigos!
5. God bless the person who invented air conditioning. I feel extreme guilt each time I flip the switch to "blizzard", but without this modern commodity, I could never sleep soundly 5 months out of the year.

Honey Dew

Honey Dew came home to live with us in December. She is quite the crazy puppy and loves playing in her backyard. We thought she would never get potty trained, but finally after 6 months she's got it down! Honey has quite the voracious appetite and will eat just about anything. (At 7 mos. she weighs in at 62 pounds) We spend lots of time chasing her around the house, when she snatches things off the counters and tables. She likes to play "keep away" with Justin's socks every night when he's getting ready for work. Most of her pictures are when she first wakes up because that is the only time we can get her to sit still! She and her two sisters sleep quite soundly on our Sealy bed! (heeehee) Honey came from a home that loved Labradors, just like us. We thank the Wargo family in Stow for our beautiful pup, who brings great joy to our lives everyday!

("The Snoopy" look occurs after being scolded! She's too cute to stay mad.)

Dogs Just Wanna Have Fun!

Lucy is a swimmer. She loves her puppy pool and sometimes hops in the shower with me. She really is a water dog!

Abbey, you're such a good girl!

Oh Boy! What a wild girl you are Honey Dew.

Random Acts of Kindness

Tonight I stopped and helped a disabled car and it's passengers on the side of the highway.

- 2 a.m.
- flat tire
- 2 women
- make that 2 women looking very confused

Not a good senario. I've had myself a heaping helping of highway car trouble, so I felt the need to stop. If you have never had the highway car crisis, you can't relate. But, if you have- you understand how terrified you are that some soda drinking, radio surfing, child tending idiot is going to barrel into your stationary vehicle at 65mph. To make a long story short these two chicks were far from home and without a spare tire OR jack. I will not elaborate on how silly this move was on their behave. Regardless, I found a keen use for a cell phone and within the hour they were homeward bound.

I believe in random acts of kindness. It made me sad to hear that they had been sitting on the side of the road for over an hour and not one person had stopped to assist. While we were waiting for a ride, a state highway patrol officer actually passed us by without so much as a brake light. Very disappointing. Indeed. I suppose most people do not stop because they believe the person is a serial killer... or they are just in a hurry to get on with their life. I have always believed that life comes full circle eventually and karma is mighty ugly when it catches up with you. When you see someone in need, stop your busy life and lend a hand. Next time it could be you walking in their shoes.

Top Ten Songs...Ever!

A short list of 10 songs I could never get tired of...

10.) "Nothin' But A Good Time"- Poison
9.) "Linger"- The Cranberries
8.) "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"- Cyndi Lauper
7.) "Reelin' In the Years"- Steely Dan
6.) "Tiny Dancer"- Elton John (sorry Ms. Marie, but it's true!)
5.) "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" - George Strait (oh George, we ARE old friends, aren't we?)
4.) "Mr. Brownstone"- Guns-n-Roses
3.) "Tuesday's Gone"- Lynyrd Skynyrd
2.) "Fishin' In the Dark"- Nitty Gritty Dirt Bank
1.) "Going To Carolina"- James Taylor

This is a list of ten, so I could not include every song by George Strait or James Taylor. But, to be sure they are my fav. I nearly lost my mind when I finally got to see the "Great Strait" in concert February 16th, 2007. Each song has a special place in my heart and seems to transport me to a different place in time. I would like to thank my mother for raising her children to have a fine appreciation for ALL types of music. Some of my greatest memories are sitting cross-legged on the living room floor with her, listening to her record collection. Two Decades and thousands of songs later, three twenty-something kids are driving down the highway singing those same songs together in unison- at the top of their lungs in between giggles!

Thanks Ma.

One More Picture...

IF it were up to me and we lived somewhere other than the city, I wouldn't blink an eye. This is the reason we would never breed dogs. I would never be able to find homes good enough for these beautiful pups. Alas, I have promised Justin no more dogs until we have outlived the three we have. Ohhh, but to dream...

Rise and Shine Sleeping Beauty

I don't think Justin is that enthusiastic about having his picture taken when he first wakes up. Just a hunch.

Rain, Rain...here to stay!

The forecast calls for rain.
And some more rain.

So much for yard work (yeah!)

But...rain leads to this.

And this.

Guilty!

These are the faces of three VERY guilty pups, who tore up the bathroom trash all over my carpet after being left alone for 10 whole minutes. I think it is safe to say, we have our hands full!

The List of To-Do's

I have procrastinated. For Two Weeks. And now, I must suffer.
It was fun while it lasted, but now I must.......

1.) Wash like 10 loads of laundry, including all the blankets in my house.
2.) Clean my car out- it is REALLY bad!!!!!
3.) Put together my NEW clothing rack from Ikea ($4.99- what a steal!)
4.) Plant my flowers and do all the trimming (I loath yard work)
5.) Give three labradors a bath. In a baby pool. In the back yard.
6.) Run the vacuum through the entire house.
7.) Finish tearing down the wallpaper in the kitchen.

There is a lot more to do, but I think I will stop there. Let's not get carried away! It's suppose to be the day of rest.

We are....

Fun to Hang Out With!
VERY Ticklish!

Happily Married!

Leave Sleeping Dogs Lie

We WERE taking a nap....

Then came puppy kisses...

All proof that you should leave sleeping dogs lie.

Proof that people are strange

Do you know this man?

We bought our cellphone on eBay from him.

The phone works great!

I'm not sure why he felt compelled to send us a photo, of him hanging out in his backyard.

I think this is just more proof that people are stranger than we think.

5 Things That Make Me Strange

I am often told I'm a little on the unusual side. ...Really?? So I tried not-very hard to think of 5 things that make me a "strange ranger".

1. I won't drink out of a plastic cup. Nope. I sure won't. I think that we are slowly being poisoned by Tupperware, not to mention that everything just tastes funny coming out of plastic!

2. I don't like summer. I never have. Too many reasons to explain...

3. I imagine that sea creatures may be able to sense my fear and so I have concluded that the extent of my beach experience will be walking the edge of the surf and collecting uninhabited shells. Sorry Atlantic Ocean... just not a fan.

4. I do not like the round chicken nuggets from Wendy's. I request the "non-round" 5 piece when I visit. Justin is typically mortified when the cashier looks at me with a crinkled eyebrow and says, "huh?".

5. I am so claustrophobic that I must always have the window open in the car. No matter what the weather is like.

A Story That Touches My Heart

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is Heaven," he answered.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

"The View"

I can't resist throwing a few thoughts towards this talkshow. This show is well known for it's inability to assemble a group of hosts that can peacefully discuss topics affecting our world today. I sat and watched the episode of Rosie O'Donnell and Elizabeth Hasselbeck feuding over a comment that Rosie had made on a previous episode regarding nearly 3/4 of a million dead Iraqi citizens. This comment sent waves of anti-patriotism accusations Rosie's way and ended with an all-out bitch fit on national television. I believe the intention of this show is to discuss certain sensitive topics and hear views and opinions from four different women. Thus, should we not expect to get 4 different opinions? Instead of being able to listen to the topic matter and see a few different points of view, we are subjected to the childish, high-pitched squeals of an obviously pissed- off Elizabeth Hasselbeck. I was truely surprised that Hasselbeck didn't throw herself to the floor and scream like a three year old child! I suspect Republicans everywhere were as embarrassed as myself that this woman associates herself with the party. Never-the-less, I believe the point here is that regardless of whether you agree with something someone says, this is still America and everyone is entitled to their opinion! Congrats to O'Donnell for remaining civilized in her responses to Hasselbeck. She possesses the qualities necessary to express one's self even in the face of opposition.
I would not be inclined to say that I agree 100% with O'Donnell's comments regarding this topic. I might suggest that declining to believe there is some validity to her comment is cowardly. We may love our troops without supporting the assignments they have undertaken. We must dare to oppose our governments decision making at all times, for with indifference of good people comes great evil. How many innocent lives will end today because no one had the guts to accuse our government of wrong-doing.

Has This Ever Happened To You?

So... tonight I was going through a few odds and ends of things in our house and I happened across a movie from Giant Eagle Video. Now this movie had caused several assorted conversations with the video store that were on the more unpleasant side. I swore venomously that this video had been returned and that the general incompetence of the clerk was most assuredly to blame. After a lot of bad noise, they removed the black mark from my name and soon after closed their doors. I now feel a burdon of guilt at the closing of their establishment and feel that I owe someone an apology...but who???? Open mouth and insert foot....big foot!!!

Strawberry Swirl Cake

Now...in case you haven't noticed, I love strawberries!! I am dedicating the month of May to strawberries and the delicious desserts they make. I found this recipe recently, and it is super easy and yummy!

1 pkg. (2-layer size) white cake mix
1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Brand Strawberry Flavor Gelatin
2/3 cup BREAKSTONE'S or KNUDSEN Sour Cream
2/3 cup powdered sugar
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed
1-1/2 cups sliced strawberries

PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 8- or 9-inch round cake pans; set aside. Prepare cake batter as directed on package. Pour half of the batter into medium bowl. Add dry gelatin mix; stir until well blended. Spoon half of the white batter and half of the pink batter, side-by-side, into each prepared pan. Swirl batters together using a teaspoon.
BAKE 30 min. Cool 30 min. in pans. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.
MIX sour cream and powdered sugar in medium bowl until well blended. Gently stir in whipped topping. Place one of the cake layers on serving plate; spread top with 1 cup of the whipped topping mixture. Top with 1 cup of the strawberries and remaining cake layer. Spread top and side of cake with remaining whipped topping mixture. Top with remaining 1/2 cup strawberries just before serving. Store any leftover cake in refrigerator.
